SWOT

Strengths Free entry mostly free exhibitions massive tourist attraction easy access, in the middle of city Weaknesses cafes are expensive not really targeted at millenials, felt out of place, no areas for us to go. because the museum is so big, you feel exhausted after looking at everything so may kids and families so it feels uncomfortable for millenials museum closes at 6pm Opportunities Museum could stay open later needs to make millenials feel more included make learning more fun Threats Internet is taking over, that's how millennials learn  it's becoming somewhat childish and boring for millennials other places like cafes and bars are the main attractions for mellenials, they don't want to go to a museum because they dont see it as fun

Prototyping round 2.

Image
After prototyping our Quiz night in class we got some very helpful feedback around what wasn't working.  For our second round of prototyping we made some changes to the way Te papa at night will run and we got some more positive feedback. We want to create Te Papa at night as a fun and casual night, where you can jump into a scavenger hunt like search of the museum if you like, but still have the option of hanging out with live music, and grab a drink and some food. We realised we were focussing too much on our idea of the scavenger hunt and not enough on our big idea of 'Te Papa at night.' We've worked on our wording and made it clearer that our scavenger hunt is just an example of a potential Te Papa at night event. If Te Papa hate our example of a 'spotlight scavenge' then they can still use the idea of Te Papa at night but follow through with it in a different form. We were told the 'gimicky' questions like 'how many stairs...

Prototyping

Image
Today in class we prototyped our big idea "Te Papa at Night" in the hope of getting an insite into what millennials find a fun and relaxing way to learn. We prototyped three touch points. 1. An app used to sign up for a quiz night.  We believe that millennials learn best in a collaborative environment. To Verify that, we will create quiz teams through an app that connects people of different areas on knowledge, and measure how comfortable people are being grouped with people they don't know. We are right if people sign up to groups with people they don't know. Observations The group of class mates we tested this touch point on felt like it was a lot of admin, and having this many questions before the quiz night makes them feel like they wouldn't want to go to something this organised. They would like it if it was more spontaneous, something that you could just turn up to with out so much preassure. They also felt uncomfortable grouping up with ...

Lux Light Festival - The Possibilities of Night

Image
The Lux light festival very successfully took advantage of the fact that night is dark and explored the potential of light. It was successful with millennials because it was interactive, played with the senses and seemed quite 'magical'. It was an atmosphere that could only be achieved at night.

Researching the Potential of Museums at Night

Image
San Francisco has great range of 'nightlife' museum experiences that are very popular with millennials. For example, the California Academy of Sciences is open on Thursdays from 6-10pm and a 'new adventure unfolds' at night. They offer glow in the dark 'science' cocktails, food-carts, live music, parties, photo booths, and even offer events like night-time yoga! The museum of Scotland had an open-late night and included live music, dress ups, and things like a 'silent disco' where people all danced together with their headphones in! They really played with all of the senses in their night-time experience. Being open at night would create a completely different vibe, families with children would be at home, and there is great potential to do things with light, music, food and drink at this time. There could be star gazing on the top floor where people get taught about the stars with a beautiful night-time view of Wellington Harbour, ...

Group Quiz Night 'Research'

Image
As a group, we went to a quiz night at the Southern Cross bar to see potential pros and cons of a quiz night in engaging millennials. Here is what we found out: Firstly, quiz nights tend to be aimed at an older audience as they have gathered more general knowledge. We could give our quiz a modern/ current twist to engage millennials and provide a point of difference from other quiz nights. (We teamed up with some other millennials we didn't know and still lost!).  We also found that this quiz night had rather an intimidating atmosphere at first. All the tables were full because people has come for dinner before the quiz and we hadn't, a booking system would be ideal. Approaching new people to share a table was also intimidating, especially if they were people older than us.  The quiz also went for a couple of hours, which dragged on, especially seeing as we didn't know anything and didn't feel like we could really contribute. Perhaps there is a good opportu...

Our Big idea - revised

For millenials the traditional 9-5 work schedual is quickly becoming a relic of the past. Unusual work hours and weekend work are on the rise. It is now common for millenials to be juggling multiple part-time roles rather than a single full-time job. Some millenials also have university, which results in a full on work load. As a result they don't have spare time during the day. Due to this shift in work patterns and university hours, millenials rely on the businesses that cater to this shift by incresing their opening hours. Suprisingly "Te Papa" closes at 6pm every evening making it difficult to fit in regular visits. Because of this our big idea is "Te Papa at Night" These will be fortnightly events aimed at engaging a millenial audience with the extensive resources "Te Papa" has to offer.

Our Big Idea

User Busy student from wellington juggling full-time study and part-time work. They are interesting in learning, but because they learn all day at uni in their spare time they want to take a break and catch up with friends.  Needs A fun and engaging way to learn about New Zealand history that motivates them to take a break out of their busy schedual to visit Te Papa.  Insight The user is interested in NZ history and wants to learn more but Te Papa isn't accessible because it closes at 6pm and the way information is displayed at Te Papa isn't engaging for millennials. Currently the Te Papa expereince is exsausting because of the over load of information. Our big idea "Te Papa at night" For Te Papa to host fortnightly quiz nights that connect people from different areas of expertise through an app. We want this to be a way for people to learn about New Zealand in a fun and casual environment so that it feels like a break rather than a chore. This q...

Tuatara Open Late - City Art Gallery

India and I went down to the Tuatara Open late night at the City Gallery on Thursday. We both have an interest in Art so for us it was enjoyable because it got us to the gallery and we enjoyed looking at the new Colin Mccahon exhibition. How ever I brought some friends along who weren't so in to art and they found it quite boring, from their point of view their point of view a bunch of people standing around drinking wine and looking at abstract art wasn't their idea of fun, nor was it inclusive for those who maybe are coming to learn about art. With this in mind we want to make sure our events at Te Papa are inclusive of all levels of knowledge and for those who aren't used to being in a museum space.

Auckland Escape Rooms

Mk Hayley talked about how people enjoy experiences where they have to reach a goal or have to achieve something, as it gives them a challenge and makes things more interesting, relating to our idea of a quiz night. She mentioned escape rooms as being one of those experiences people enjoy, especially millennials. In auckland there's a selection of escape room people love because they are tricky but fun. Each of them have a kiwi twist which makes the whole experience feel more personal, which is another important element of creating a great experience. As a group you have to solve a mystery and find your way out of the room in a certain amount of time by working through a series of puzzles. people can go onto the escapadenz website,  ://escapadenz.co.nz/games/  and from there they can select from 4 different escape rooms, or games as they say, each with their own kiwi history involved. They can book online, select the day and amount of people they want to play, which game ...

Mk Haley Talk - Helpful stuff

As a group we went and listened to Mk Haley talk about experience design at TePapa and we found it very interesting and useful. Here are some key notes we took down: An experience in a physical location is not mandatory for brands to create engaging experiences that connect a consumer with a brand in a positive way. Personalisation matters. How do you get them to go there? Experiences in a physical location is an oppurtunity for personalised attention. Create a memory/ unique experience. Achievements by solving something  - puzzles, clues, escape room, scavenger hunt... Auckland esape room  - the shed. Goals create memorable experiences. Safety and wellbeing. Need facts – access to real time info. Deeper engagement through closer experiences creates affinity and generates loyalty. First impressions. Word of mouth – you have a relationship with not just one consumer. Sensitivity to customer and their time. Living museums – have ways to provide demonstrations ...

How do we make a quiz night a unique Te Papa experience

Image
Audience needs  Reputation is a driver of visitation and social media is a driver of Reputation (people trust word of mouth and reviews more than advertisting)  Engaging, interactive, authentic, trustworthy, dynamic, participitory, expert, real-time.  Connective communications that increse reputation - Relevant onsite expereinces the increse reputation.  Free admission, belonging to an organisation, supporting an organisation, supporting conservation, positive environmental impact.            (www.colleendilen.com) Brainstorm  Pick a person from history to be on your team (virtual or actor) they will have specialised knowledge, may or may not be helpful.  Pick an expert or Te papa staff member to be on your team to create personalised interactions with staff, break down the barrier between them.  Participatory - submit questions, nominate your experise on app to team you up with people you don't know....

Useful Research

This site is really useful to us as it touches on 4 main things that museums need to do to engage millennials. These points really relate to our initial idea of opening late and having some kind of quiz night. They are things that are really important for us to remember when designing our experience. http://www.achieveagency.com/4-ways-museums-can-engage-millennials/ 1. Leverage our love of nostalgia. It might seem ridiculous to old-timers since we’re only 20-35 years old, but Millennials  love  nostalgia.  Give us the sense of returning to a museum we might have visited on an elementary school field trip by having young professional events like touring the museum after hours. 2. We value networking and making connections. We Millennials are a social bunch and like to be heard.  Consider creating a young professionals group that is invited to volunteer or contribute to special events and leadership meetings. 3. We’re always looking for free or cheap thin...

What else is happening in Wellington

Wellington is full shows, events and festivals. While this determines the market for evening events in Wellington it is important that we research what other evening events are happening in Wellington so that we can create an experience unique to Te Papa that Milenialls are going to come back to time and time again. USER ONE  Matthew 28, works full time.  Matthew loved history at school and enjoys learning new things, but since starting his full-time job he finds it hard to find time for reading and heading out to exhibitions. Instead he occasionally watches documentaries at home, but mostly he just reads up about news online and watches You Tube in bed, because it’s quick and easy.  Every now and then Matthew will head to an event at the arts festival is or a late night at the gallery, which he always finds inspiring and thinks “I should do this more often”, but his weekends are busy catching up with friends and spending time with his girlfriend so he never ends up finding the time.  Inspire me Connect me  Include me  Mathew needs the time and motivation to get out and experience the museums and galleries of Wellington more often.  USER TWO Dedicated to design, Daisy.     20, full time student at Massey Univ...

Brainstorming Ideas

Image
In class we discussed the similarities between our interviews which gave us some idea for the kind of space we might want to look at designing. After some discussion we decided we liked the idea of 'Te Papa' at night. This gives us a lot of options for an exhibition, event or space that can occur in the evening. We thought of this as millennial generally don't have much time during the day to visit Te Papa because if things like work and uni, as it closes at 6pm. This will give them an opportunity to view exhibitions later in the day. We liked the idea of having a quiz night asking questions about Te Papa exhibitions and also NZ history. We need to make sure this quiz will be fun and intriguing and not boring for that age group. We think the quiz nights could remain relevant by being related to current events and exhibitions and that there could be clues hidden around the museum to do with the questions so that before the quiz, so people have incentive to go around the...

Key findings from interviews

A commonality between our interviews is that corrupt history about the colonisation of New Zealand and the Treaty of Waitangi is the part of NZ history that is emphasised most in schools. Although this part of history is very important to learn it is something that New Zealanders are not proud of. There are so many interesting and inspiring this about New Zealand from things as simple as we have the the steepest street in the world and the southern most city in the world, as well as really inspirational things like we were the first country to give women the vote. Because of this we need to communicate the positive and relatable aspects of New Zealand history that can promote millennials to feel proud to be Kiwi. - Urban culture. -Positive relationships between cultures through out history, who settled here and when, what       happened? From our visit to Te Papa we could see that the interactive, visual and audio elements of exhibitions seemed more popular and wer...
