Key findings from interviews
A commonality between our interviews is that corrupt history about the colonisation of New Zealand and the Treaty of Waitangi is the part of NZ history that is emphasised most in schools. Although this part of history is very important to learn it is something that New Zealanders are not proud of. There are so many interesting and inspiring this about New Zealand from things as simple as we have the the steepest street in the world and the southern most city in the world, as well as really inspirational things like we were the first country to give women the vote.
Because of this we need to communicate the positive and relatable aspects of New Zealand history that can promote millennials to feel proud to be Kiwi.
- Urban culture.
-Positive relationships between cultures through out history, who settled here and when, what happened?
From our visit to Te Papa we could see that the interactive, visual and audio elements of exhibitions seemed more popular and were the most memorable.
An opportunity to give feedback, contribute and communicate with others is also important.
A space to relax and digest information is also important, because learning is exhausting.
Another interesting thing we noted was that millennials don't have time during the day to visit the museum as they are at uni or working, and TePapa closes at 6pm, making it quite inaccessible to this age group. There are many other places such as the zoo, the City Gallery and Zelandia that open late and this has been shown to be very successful.
